Our Northwoods Adventure: Part 1 of 5

Where is UP NORTH Wisconsin? Is it a place or a state of mind?

Highway 8 / 47 Traffic SIgn
Which way to go?

To me Up North Wisconsin is always North of Highway 8.  That is where the real fun begins.  Don’t get me wrong, we have had many great adventures just North of Green Bay, but when we get “North of 8” we have the time of our lives.

This weekend the air up there smelt fresh, cool, and sweet. There was a distinct scent of pine and bark.  It was a beautiful drive.  We always seem to take 47 North through the Menomimee Reservation from Seymour.  Our first stop is usually the McDonalds in Shawano for an iced coffee.

Driving along the Wolf is always a treat.  The forest is so amazing.  We had the entire road to ourselves this weekend.  After a fresh snowfall the world seems to come to life with beauty.  Highway 47 through Menominee Reservation south of Antigo is pure beauty.

There is a little stop I have to share that we make every time we come up. It is about 5 miles north of Antigo.  It is called J&P Liquidators.  They have unusually unique and super inexpensive finds.  The first time we stopped there I picked up a felt basket for magazines to put in front of our fireplace.  It is charcoal grey and trimmed in ivory whip stitching. I think I paid 8 dollars for it. A similar basket at Pottery Barn would easily be 50-75 dollars.

Pocket Knives
So many knifes to choose from!

This time I picked up a small knife for camping in turquoise, mother of pearl and silver for $17.50. I also grabbed an all wood bowl lined in blue and ivory ceramic for $14.00.  It’s a fun place to explore.  They have great toys and things for the kids and lots of tools and supplies for your man cave or garage.

If you get the chance to stop on your way you might find a little treasure or great deal also. H thinks it’s funny how I love to keep these little traditions. Somehow each time, every year, the memories get stronger and these little hidden places feel like home.

We have a few spots picked out in the area and hopefully sooner then later we will call one of them home!
